AbSorber develops AB0 diagnostic test

AbSorber AB, launched its first product, XM-ONE, at the end of 2006. AbSorber's next product - an AB0 diagnostic test - was presented at a conference on AB0 incompatible transplantation outside Stockholm. Market launch for the product is expected in 2008. AbSorber's new test measures the concentration of blood group A

and B antibodies. The test will provide doctors with a more reliable basis for decision-making, thereby facilitating greater transplantation success.

Transplantation clinics have long avoided transplanting organs between hosts and donors of different blood groups. This is because blood group antigens, from blood groups other than the host's own, often give rise to very strong rejection reactions. Today, technology to clean the blood of such antibodies has been developed and clinical experience of using medication to suppress immunoreactions is growing. This makes blood group antigen measurements a key decisionmaking factor for transplantation clinics.

AbSorber's new product measures the concentration of blood group A and B antibodies. The product is based on beads (magnetic nanoparticles) carrying synthetic blood group A and B antigens. By adding patient sera to the beads, the presence of blood group antibodies can be measured by flow cytometry. The most common measurement method used today is based on hemagglutination.

Measurement results are unreliable in that they vary from time to time and from clinic
to clinic. No other standardized method exists for measuring blood group antibodies on the market today. AbSorber believes that there is strong potential for the company to develop a test that provides a considerably higher level of test result reliability.

Absorber's partner Professor Jan Holgersson presented the preliminary results of this project from the Karolinska University Hospital at a conference on AB0 incompatible transplantations that was held outside Stockholm.

Today, AbSorber sells the cross-match text XM-ONE, the only test on the market that detects antibodies against the endothelium as well as larger transplantation antigens.
